Paging File Question
Looks
a good article... will have a read later when I'm not under the afluence of incohol like I am at the mo ;-) Page file is one complicated area but I would rather my PC/application crash through my (maybe incorrect) settings than have the PC deceive me and continue to use PF after I explicitly disabled it.

Pagefile question
NT configures the PAGEFILE.SYS as physical RAM+11 during installation. The recommended settings from MS are as follows: MIN=Physical RAM+12 IE:64+12=76 MAX=Phsical RAM*2.5 IE:64*2.5=160 Straight from the book. Besides that being wrong....where did you learn to add? 64+11=75 NOT 73 ????? mms Peg1126 wrote in message

PAGE File Question...can this be done
I wonder what % of the partition / drive free disk space will represent after setting a page file size. Is there a secondary issue on Zach's machine? I think his numbers sound about right 1 GB is 1024 MB x 3 x 1.5 = 4608 MB. I don't think there is necesarily a problem with his machine. That sounds like a per-swap

If it is just used for storing downloads and backups or similar then putting the page file there will still be beneficial even if the drive is slower. The reason is that this arrangement will minimize the amount of drive head mechanism repositioning that occurs when the page file is being used.

Newbie Page File Question
Personally, I've removed the page file altogether from my boot partition and have a 1Gb partition in the middle of my second (7200rpm) disk that's used exclusively for the page file - no fragmentation (esp as the page file is set at min and max 980Mb). The real optimal config is to put the page file on it's own

By
moving the pagefile to a different partition, you are moving it *further* from data that is used from time-to-time (like dll's and exe's). Leaving the pagefile on the boot partition can have some bad effects. In Win2K, I don't believe the system defragger could move around the pagefile, meaning that once it was

Newbie swap file size question PS6
For those who dont know you can build a partition and direct your swap file to load to that "drive" or partition. This is a nice little tweak for optimizing system performance. In other words a fixed size pagefile. 3. the pagefile size should not be set at more than twice the physical mem. Question from New User - Default Home Page File Name
Make sure that any page file you use is on a separate hard drive to your os and also any work files and that should also be a great improvement. Allow windows to manage the pagefile on your chosen disk at first and then try to increase this manually if desired. -- Gazwad Freelance scientist and people tester.

Page file Question
I changed the swap file so that it was around 20 megs in size. I figured that with the amount of RAM that the system had, a large swap file wouldn't be necessary. While I think that Richard means that *if* you want to use your page file as a dump file as well, *then* the page file must be on the system disk, No, what he means is that your primary paging file must reside on your system disk.
